Staff Learning & Development

This clearinghouse of university resources has been created to help staff identify and satisfy their learning development needs. Resources address both individual and organizational development perspectives.

KU is an environment focused on learning, growth, and excellence — not just for the students we serve, but for all of us who contribute to fulfilling KU's mission of teaching, research, and service. Ensuring an environment of continuous learning enhances excellence and is fundamental to staff morale and retention. I encourage every member of the KU community to become actively engaged by exploring avenues for your own learning and professional development. Employees are encouraged to seek the assistance of their supervisors and make use of other university resources in the pursuit of continuous education and learning. I encourage supervisors to enable employees to achieve their educational goals and to support and encourage the participation of staff members in learning opportunities as fully as possible while still maintaining an effective workplace.

Staff learning and development philosophy...
In keeping with the University's goal of facilitating opportunities for life-long learning and thereby encouraging employee productivity and enhancing career development, the University of Kansas, Lawrence, has a strong commitment to encouraging the professional development of staff members. To support that goal, department heads and supervisors are strongly encouraged to support staff members who wish to enroll in academic courses and to participate in training programs, conferences, short courses, and workshops held on or off campus.

When appropriate and advantageous to the performance of the staff member and to the unit, release time and/or reimbursement of related expenses may be approved. The University provides resources for professional development, including programs that provide general support for the self-improvement efforts of faculty and staff. In addition, faculty and staff may be eligible to enroll in classes offered by the University at a reduced rate and may be eligible for the University’s Tuition Assistance Program. (see Financial Assistance section)
